As the Sounders get ready for a self-selected break to fit in their friendly versus Chelsea their original opponent for the weekend is struggling. Not struggling like they look merely average, instead Real Salt Lake is just plain bad lately. Lately in this case goes back about six weeks. They are basically as bad as Seattle was during their slide, but the Sounders never lost to a lower division team. In the overall rankings RSL has a vote spread of eight, with only the Chicago Fire having a greater range of placement in the SB Nation MLS Power Rankings.
The other preseason Western Conference contender for the 1 seed is still a bit on the rise, though crushing Portland didn't help them much. For four weeks rankers have the LA Galaxy as a marginal playoff team, with some of that being because the Rapids and Chivas don't look great either. The power in the West is clearly with the San Jose Earthquakes who are the unanimous number one.
While not unanimous, the Portland Timbers drop to last. Maybe it wasn't Spencer's fault they were losing. In two week's of rankings since he was fired they've fallen a full point or more in average ranking each week. Rankers now have them below FC Dallas and Toronto FC. The northern Cascadia Rival continues to sit near Seattle. The Vancouver Whitecaps did fall, but are the 4th team in the West when broken out by conference.
|Playoffs by Power Ranking|
At this point the playoff picture in the West really comes down to Seattle or Salt Lake in the 2nd to 4th spot, while Vancouver and LA could pop up to 3rd or fall to 5th. It would take a significant run by Colorado to reenter the picture.
