Sounders v LA Galaxy - Gamethread

New, 458 comments

The most important thing about tonight's nationally televised game is not the result. Today is one of those days with the odd confluence of real-life as both of tonight's MLS matches will have a moment of silence to respect the passing of Columbus Crew player Kirk Urso. This moment will be surrounded with crowds beyond comparison, a borrowing of some SeaFair style festivities, tifo and as many stars as have been on the pitch at once.

Both the LA Galaxy and Seattle Sounders are scrambling to get the highest playoff seeding that they can. Where many Sounders fans see their weakness on defense, it is the Galaxy that have the weaker defense and the stronger offense. It also isn't the offense you'd expect. Seattle is better on set-plays, where the Galaxy get their goals from rapid ball-on-floor counters. Sigi Schmid and team will need to prepare for those counters by keeping at least one more man back than they usually do.

Offensively the Sounders can take advantage of an LA backline that is unfamiliar with each other. If Omar Gonzalez starts and Sean Franklin plays the right mid, that gets rid of the CB pairing that is most effective against the style of forwards Seattle uses. This will lead to Fredy Montero being in empty spaces for long shots or an out of shape line that favors Eddie Johnson's lateral speed and power. LA is also expected to be without quality LB Todd Dunivant, so Mauro Rosales will have opportunities.

One final note: Drink water and use sunscreen.

The broadcast is on ESPN2 and 97.3 FM at 6:00 PM Pacific.
