UPDATE: Mario Martinez has now been quoted as saying he's planning to join the Sounders after Honduras plays Boca Juniors in a friendly on Aug. 15.
On the heels of what could reasonably be called a breakout performance in the Olympics, interest has rightfully grown in presumed future Seattle Sounders midfielder Mario Martinez. I say "presumed" because some reports out of Honduras have surfaced that suggest Martinez has been weighing other options and that his deal with the Sounders is not entirely finalized.
This prompted me to request a statement from Sounders GM Adrian Hanauer, who told me this on Monday: "We have no reason to think that he won’t be here in the next week."
I suppose that until Martinez is literally wearing Rave Green there's always going to be some question about whether or not he's coming here. No story has quoted Martinez as saying he won't be here, though, and it kinda makes sense that he's keeping the door just a little bit open until he actually has his visa in his hand. This story actually suggests he should be on a plane to Seattle soon. For now, I think we can stop worrying.
