Today a snapshot of Major League Soccer's jersey sales posted at MLS Insider's blog. The top 10 is dominated by the famous from their time in Europe or their time with US and Canadian national teams. Those famous only for their time in MLS start at #4 with Fredy Montero. Chris Wondolowski and Mauro Rosales are the only others in the top 10 that are famous solely for their MLS time. The Seattle Sounders FC also have an Osvaldo Alonso come in at #13.
The snapshot only looks at kits bought through MLS operated internet properties during the 2012 season. It is not a large surprise that the Sounders are near the tops of this list. Their merch sales actually compete with merchandise sales from the "major" sports leagues in America and there is no need for a "not the NFL caveat."
For all the grief levied by the hard-core and dedicated Electricity Yellow, Super Cyan and Silver TechFit straps sell. Could they sell more, maybe? But when a team in SouthWest Alaska is as popular as this just maybe what they are doing works.
Oh, and next year Seattle? Eddie Johnson better be on that list.
