Sounders pick forwards Chad Barrett, Corey Hertzog in Stage 2 of Re-Entry Draft

A day after trading Eddie Johnson to D.C. United, the Seattle Sounders picked up a couple more forwards in Stage 2 of the MLS Re-Entry Draft on Wednesday. In Chad Barrett and Corey Hertzog, they'll surely be hoping to resurrect even more dramatic career turnarounds than they did with Johnson two years ago.

Barrett was once a solid MLS forward, scoring 14 goals in about 3,100 minutes as recently as 2010-11. He was also highly thought-of enough to be the key component in the trade that allowed the Chicago Fire to acquire Brian McBride back in 2008.

Always somewhat suspect of a finisher, Barrett has barely even played the past couple seasons. In about 1,300 minutes with the LA Galaxy and New England Revolution he scored three goals and had five assists. Considering he was on about $110,000 of guaranteed compensation, it was hardly surprising that the 28-year-old was made available in the Re-Entry Draft.

Hertzog's career has never even reached that point. Hertzog was among the nation's top scorers in college and earned himself a Generation Adidas contract ahead of the 2011 SuperDraft. But he only logged 35 minutes over two seasons with the New York Red Bulls, although he did score nine goals in 17 games with the Wilmington Hammerheads while on loan to the USL-Pro team.

After the Red Bulls let him go, he signed with the Vancouver Whitecaps. He only played 428 minutes in his one season there, scoring a goal and getting one assist. He was making about $60,000 last year.

The Sounders will have a week to make a "qualifying offer," and then still retain the right of first refusal after that.
