Every team uses a preseason match a bit differently. Some will be trying to discover what their first XI is, while others are trying to see if trialists and invitees should get contracts. For this reason a traditional preview is useless. There is also a reduction of the rivalry aspect. Still it is the Portland Timbers v the Seattle Sounders so it will mean a bit more.
Sigi Schmid was clear yesterday that for him this match is about testing the backend of the roster while getting the returning members of the 18 some fitness work.
"I expect to see where guys are fitness-wise. I expect to see everybody play a solid 45 minutes because it’s the end of our fitness week. So we get to see how they’re doing that way then they get a couple of days off, and then we start training again on Friday there should be a sharpness back into their step, maybe that sharpness comes Saturday. It usually takes one training to get that out of you. And to be able to make decisions on certain roster spots, to be able to look at some of the trialists who are in here, especially the foreign guys like a Phillip Lund and a Djimi Traore and a Shavar Thomas to give us an indication to where they are at. Those are the most important things the result is secondary."
Many fans will be most intrigued by the trialists of course. But here are some other key points to watch.
- How does Yedlin do against his old coach?
- Who plays as the withdrawn forward?
- Can Hurtado & Scott handle the lateral speed of Portland?
- Oh, and beat Portland. It is just preseason, but beat the Timbers.
