Obafemi Martins has opened his Seattle Sounders account. The Designated Player scored his first-ever Sounders goal, putting home a rebound off a Shalrie Joseph shot 27th minute. Almost as impressive as his goal was his celebration, as he broke out his trademark handspring into backflip that he has become known for.
The goal gave the Sounders a 1-0 lead and sent them into halftime ahead for just the second time this season. The Sounders are looking for their first win after five straight winless matches.
Martins was a bit of a surprise start, as he had been limited in training earlier this week. But Sigi Schmid had apparently seen enough to give him a shot. Martins' presence was made all the more important because of the decision to leave Eddie Johnson back in Seattle.
This was Martins' third appearance in Rave Green and his second start. Martins had only logged about 80 minutes in his previous appearances.
