Sounders would host Portland Timbers or Hammerheads if advance to US Open Cup 4th Round

The coin flip comes out in Seattle's favor. If they advance past the Tampa Bay Rowdies (NASL) they would host either the Wilmington Hammerheads or the Portland Timbers.

First up is the match visiting the Tampa Bay Rowdies, but the potential Fourth Round US Open Cup match schedule release from US Soccer shows the potential for a visit by the Portland Timbers to Starfire if both sides advance. If the Timbers lose to the Wilmington Hammerheads than the other former USL-2 (currently USL Pro) team would travel to Tukwila to face the Sounders. Either match would be Wednesday June 12th at 7 PM.

The potential for a Sounders/Timbers Cup match just a few days after the Whitecaps match at CenturyLink is a dream for lovers of the Cascadia rivalry. It is also the type of match that intrigues TV networks because people would watch. For that contest to occur both sides need to advance in their Third Round games. Both play on May 29th, with Portland hosting Wilmington and Seattle traveling to Tampa.

It would be the first meeting between Seattle and Portland in Cup competition since the 2010 US Open Cup draw that saw the Sounders advance on a Zach Scott penalty kick. Seattle beat Portland at Portland in 2009 as well.

The Sounders have not faced the Hammerheads in League play.
