While the Seattle Sounders roster is not harmed at this time, some of their competition was weakened by Jurgen Klinsmann's United States roster. The Group Stage starts on July 7th with the USA playing their first match on July 9th in Portland (tickets are available for another celebration of Cascadian-Americans). The stage ends on July 16th.
Real Salt Lake was hit hardest losing Nick Rimando, Kyle Beckerman and Tony Beltran. They will also be without Alvaro Saborio during the tournament. This weakens them for at least one match (against Dallas) LA Galaxy and US star Landon Donovan returns to the National Team. They also play FC Dallas in that stretch. Upcoming Seattle opponent San Jose Earthquakes will be without Chris Wondolowski.
Houston Dynamo, Philadelphia Union, D.C. United and Chicago Fire all also lose players to duty with the Red, White and Blue. Canada's calls hit Toronto FC, Vancouver Whitecaps and Portland Timbers. Other nations rosters are still being finalized, but when they are all final it looks like Seattle will be a rare team not losing a player to the tournament.
While the Gold Cup is a fairly quick tournament the one to three matches missed by key players on opposition sides must be an opportunity for Sigi Schmid's side to push up the table. Seattle has no more bye weeks so the games in hand will start to disappear at the same time that Western Conference Playoff competitors are down men.
