Obafemi Martins leaves early with apparent injury, makes way for Clint Dempsey

The Sounders' newest Designated Player got his debut in what has to be seen as a frustrating circumstance.

Clint Dempsey has officially made his Seattle Sounders debut. Unfortunately, it came in less-than-desirable circumstances as he replaced Obafemi Martins in the 34th minute. Martins was forced off after suffering what appeared to be a calf injury on a hard tackle.

No foul was called on the tackle that brought down Martins, but Toronto FC defender Doneil Henry took the Nigerian down from behind. Martins was slow to get up before receiving treatment on the sideline. He attempted to retake the field, but appeared to be unable to put weight on his leg.

There was no immediate diagnosis as to the exact nature of the injury or how serious it might be. With Eddie Johnson unavailable against the Houston Dynamo after receiving a yellow card earlier in the match, his sixth of the season, Martins' would obviously be a useful player to have. Martins had already helped set up the Sounders' first goal and is, of course, the team leader with seven goals.
