Toronto FC will have the good pleasure of seeing Seattle Sounders FC's new attack first. During today's press conference Sigi Schmid said the new midfielder/forward will play during Saturday's 4 PM match (KONG/Univision Deportes). What role and how long he'll see the field are to be determined after a few practice sessions.
"Where exactly, how we're going to play," Sigi said, "that's something we'll work out in the next few days on the training ground, and then obviously in the next three or four games as people get to understand each other and understand their roles and how their roles maybe will chance a little bit."
Dempsey was already training with Tottenham Hotspur after his World Cup Qualifying session and so is still ramping up to regain full fitness. One minor complication may be that he flew from Hong Kong to London to Seattle over the past week or so.
Sigi does not want to push him too quickly. The goal from the move is an MLS Cup. Three points against TFC helps that, but does not ensure it. As Seattle has learned this year an Ideal XI only exists on paper when injuries can mount.
"How many minutes will sort of work out. We'll sit, we'll talk, we'll see how he feels, because we don't want him to push too hard too soon and put him in a situation where he gets injured," Schmid explained. "We want him out there to maximize his minutes."
The new offense may look a lot like the old offense for a bit, but over the next few weeks expect to see what magic can be worked with the quality of players on this squad.
