Fantasy MLS: Erick Torres to the Rescue

New, 3 comments

In a matchweek where four teams play twice, Chivas USA's Erick Torres is the best option out there.

Steven Bisig-USA TODAY Sports

It's not every day you'd pick a Chivas USA forward--especially one that's got a midweek date with a tough Sounders back line--but extraordinary circumstances call for extraordinary measures. A lack of competing options plus an astonishing goal streak make Torres the best add up front this week.

Torres' Chivas USA is one of four teams to play twice this week, along with Columbus, Seattle, and Houston. A quick survey of the other forward options on those squads yield less-than-optimal alternatives:

Will Bruin, Houston-Hardly ever scores, which is not what you want out of the forward position

Dominic Oduro, Columbus-See above. Plus, he picked up a -2 attacking bonus for his spurned chances against Seattle

Federico Higuain, Columbus-Suspended for Columbus' midweek match, which also limits Oduro's upside

Obafemi Martins, Seattle-Possibly, but can you expect him to play 60+ minutes in both matches coming off his injury?

I mean, I'd let you talk me into Giles Barnes after his display against the Sounders, but the numbers show he's an inconsistent scorer too. And since Lamar Neagle is in the game as a middie, that leaves you with Torres.

The 20-year old has scored twice in the past two matches, including a dandy of a bicycle kick. In seven matches, he's already eclipsed the Goats' second-best fantasy forward, Tristan Bowen. Simply put, the youngster is "El Fuego."

Do I see him scoring against a good Sounders defense? Maybe, maybe not. But he's got a home match on the weekend against a D.C. United team that has been known to give up a few on the road. I can see him bagging a couple there, especially with Dejan Jakovic away on international duty. You laugh, but Jakovic is a starter, so Lord knows who's going to fill his place.

(For what it's worth, I also added Lamar Neagle and Brad Davis as international duty fill-ins. However, I'm having a pretty horrible season so I would definitely take that advice with a grain of salt.)

Suspensions/International Absences

Ben Jata at MLS HQ was good enough to compile a list of players who are suspended or away on national team duty. This is huge information.

Sounder At Heart standings

We've got two fantasy studs coming in at eighth overall in the F:SM game with 2,003 points. Hats off to Emilio Ekuba ($$HERP_DERP_MERP$$) and Paul V (EternalBluForeverGrn) for leading the Sounder At Heart league as the regular season enters its stretch run.
