Seattle
For the third consecutive year, Brad Evans is a participant in the USMNT January camp. This time, Evans is in camp as a first-team regular with an inside track on the starting right back spot on the World Cup roster. Matt Gaschk of SoundersFC.com caught up with him to talk about the experience from a new perspective.
CenturyLink Field will have WiFi service by the fall of 2015, in time for the 2015 NFL season, but Sounders fans should be able to enjoy the service toward the end of the 2015 MLS season.
MLS
Yesterday morning, Vancouver Whitecaps striker Camilo Sanvezzo showed up in Mexico wearing a Querétaro shirt, along with a tweet from Querétaro's official Twitter account that the club had signed Camilo. Vancouver responded later in the day by reiterating that Camilo is under contract with the Whitecaps for the 2014 season. This situation has raised the question concerning whether MLS should use unilateral clauses in its contracts.
The San Jose Earthquakes have reportedly signed Jean Baptiste Pierazzi from AC Ajaccio of Ligue 1. Ajaccio terminated its contract with Pierazzi ahead of his signing with San Jose. The Earthquakes have also brought on the PIVOT Marketing Agency to help identify sponsorship partners for the team's new kit and stadium.
Earlier in the week, we reported that Sean Okoli has been offered a contract by the Sounders. Jalen Robinson, Okoli's teammate at Wake Forest, has signed with DC United as a homegrown player. California junior Christian Dean has signed a Generation Adidas contract with MLS.
Despite recent reports that Oscar Pareja has resigned as head coach of the Colorado Rapids, he is still showing up to work. Assuming he plans to resign from his position, Burgundy Wave compiled a list of potential candidates. One of those candidates is Robin Fraser, who also appears to be interested in managing Jamaica's national team.
Jermaine Jones and Oguchi Onyewu are both potential targets for allocation order signings. Both are also much more likely to be headed to MLS in the near future, as both of their clubs declined to offer contract extensions.
The MLS offseason also happens to be wedding season for active MLS players. Real Salt Lake midfielder Kyle Beckerman tied the knot over the weekend, but his engagement photos are pretty remarkable.
NASL
The Atlanta Silverbacks will introduce a new manager today. According to Sanford Herald reporter Neil Morris, Atlanta will name Eric Wynalda as its next manager.
NWSL
The NWSL expansion draft will take place on Friday morning, and the Seattle Reign is likely to lose one of its allocated US players to the Houston Dash.
US Soccer
Although Bob Bradley is the first American to manage a club in the top-flight league, there are 5 other Americans who have managed clubs in Europe.
With recent rumors linking Aron Jóhannsson to Stoke City and Celtic, AZ Alkmaar's technical director felt the need to deny that the USMNT striker is on the move.
One American striker that may be on his way to Stoke is Juan Agudelo. Agudelo was seen at Britannia Stadium over the weekend, as Stoke City is again seeking a work permit in order to sign him.
Plans to hold the 2016 Copa America tournament in the United States are apparently moving forward. Marca has identified 6 stadia that it claims will host matches for the tournament.
England
Arsenal and England winger Theo Walcott is out for 6 months after rupturing his ACL in last weekend's FA Cup fixture against Tottenham. The injury will end Walcott's season and keep him out of the 2014 World Cup. This is the second consecutive time that Walcott will miss out on playing in the World Cup, after being left off the 23 man roster in South Africa in 2010 by Fabio Capello.
Spain
Atlético Madrid would like to be able to hold on to Diego Costa, but there are so many teams interested that they may not be able to keep him. Jose Mourinho is reportedly willing to include Juan Mata in a deal to bring Costa to Chelsea.
Real Madrid is ready to pay Luis Suarez' $115 million release clause next summer.
Marc-Andre ter Stegen is probably headed to Barcelona next summer after turning down a contract extension with Borussia Mönchengladbach.
Portugal
Thousands of mourners in Lisbon paid their respects to Benfica and Portugal legend Eusebio, who passed away on Sunday at the age of 71. Closer to home, the Toronto Star remembers his winning goal in the 1976 Soccer Bowl for the Toronto Metros-Croatia. The Seattle Times also remembers his role in that game, which was held at the newly opened Kingdome. Eusebio also played in NASL for the Las Vegas Quicksilvers in 1977 and for the New Jersey Americans in the second division American Soccer League in 1978.
Brazil
FIFA president Sepp Blatter criticized Brazil's preparations for the 2014 World Cup, with 6 of the 12 stadia behind schedule. Blatter said that no host country has been this far behind during his time with FIFA even though it has had more time to prepare than any other country.
