Sounder at Heart readers celebrated the best team in Major League Soccer by handing out great player ratings as the Seattle Sounders clinched the Supporters' Shield with a 2-0 against LA Galaxy last weekend.
Marco Pappa received one of the highest average scores of the season from the more than 310 people who entered ratings for the thrilling victory, receiving an 8.82, for his remarkable 20-minute substitute appearance that saw him score twice and clinch the Shield for the Sounders. Only Obafemi Martins has received an average score above 9 for a game this season, a 9.08 he earned for a game against Portland in August. Clint Dempsey and Chad Marshall have also received scores this year slightly higher than Marco's for this game.
Still, readers were so thrilled with Marco's performance and the victory that many of the scores in this game seemed to reflect a season-long reward as much as a deconstruction of performances in the victory. There were more 10s handed out than for any game of the year, with several folks opting to give 10s across the board to show their support of a Sounders team that has been a joy to watch all season.
Still, the average scores in this game were fairly reasonable given a 2-0 victory over the second best team in the league in the most important soccer game played in Seattle in a generation.
Read on to see the scores from this season-capping game. Community scores are followed by my scored in parenthesis and then the difference between the two:
Player: Average Fan Rating (Author Rating) Difference
Stefan Frei 7.74 (8) -0.26
DeAndre Yedlin: 6.81 (7) -0.19
Chad Marshall: 7.91 (9) -1.09
Zach Scott: 7.08 (6) +1.08 Interesting that the community scored Zach a full point higher than I did and Marshall a full point lower, placing them much closer together in terms of their performance in helping the Sounders earn the shutout.
Leo Gonzalez: 6.78 (6) +0.78
Osvaldo Alonso: 7.29 (7) +0.29
Gonzalo Pineda: 6.79 (6) +0.79
Brad Evans: 5.89 (6) -0.11 Brad is one of only four starters to receive lower scores from the community for this game than from me.
Lamar Neagle: 6.13 (6) +0.13
Clint Dempsey: 6.48 (6) +0.48
Obafemi Martins: 7.63 (7) +0.63
Subs
Marco Pappa: (72nd minute) 8.82 (9) -0.18 It's pretty amazing to think this short shift earned Marco one of the highest scores of the season. All hail Marco as a substitute, where the past two weeks he was the difference between the Sounders finishing first and second in the league in 2014.
Djimi Traore: (90th minute) 6.48 (incomplete) ~
