Major Link Soccer: The Year of the Goal

By my count there have been 30 goals scored in nine playoff matches to date. That's a lot.

The Red Bulls went "Jaws" on a floundering Crew team in front of a strong home crowd.

Seattle

Tonight's pivotal playoff match is sold out, but that doesn't mean you can't watch the boys among friends. Renton's Berliner pub (which is a great place to watch a soccer match) will be open at noon in preparation for the big game AND some lame* American Football game just before. Celebrities like Dave Clark and Mike Gastineau will be on hand to hug ferociously with each Sounders goal. Oh, and there will be some REALLY special silverware, presumably responsible for supporting the reasonable amount of alcohol to be consumed.

*GO HAWKS!!! "MEH" everyone else.

Speaking of the Seahawks, our roommates either made a really compelling argument for or against having team mascots when their live osprey Taima went rogue. This isn't the first time a hawk has "attacked" unsuspecting bystanders at the Clink.

The Seattle Impact of the MISL didn't get the memo about Seattle winning at football, losing their inaugural game 14-4.

A reminder to season ticket holders: The Sounders FC Alliance Council Business Meeting will be this weekend, significantly earlier in the year than usual. The Paramount Theatre (NOT WAMU) will open at 6pm for the 7pm meeting. The first game of the Western Conference Finals will be the next day.

Australia's Parramatta Eels Rugby team was in Seattle recently to take a tour of local sports facilities, including Starfire Sports Complex. According to The Daily Telegraph, they may play an exhibition game here in 2015.

MLS

Ours will be the last game of the MLS Playoffs Conference Semifinals; the other three games already have winners. There were no upsets in Foxborough or the Nation's Capitol, where the leading teams moved on. DC United gave New York a fight, coming within one before giving up a key goal and going down to ten men. Thierry Henry looks better than ever, and will need to stay on form if New York Red Bulls have any hope to get past the New England Revolution.

Because the Revs, after taking it to a defenseless (literally) Columbus Crew one week ago, they added insult to further insults with a 3-1 victory, in the end a 7-3 aggregate score. In effect, the Revs took a bite out of the the old Crew to leave them with their new SC identity. The victory came in front of over 20,000 fans.

This morning, Real Salt Lake fans are feeling something that Seattlites are familiar with: recovering from a stomping in the playoffs. But when Salt Lake fell behind 3-0, it just kept on getting worse.

Our league was referenced as an inspiration for a new Ottawa Senators (NHL) fan "supporter" movement.

If you ask this writer, LAFC is the closest thing to a Sounders FC that there has been since 2009. They've got the money, and they've got the vision, to be a transcendent club. Time will tell whether they match their promise, or become Chivas 2.0. Would playing in Santa Ana be a move for the former, or the latter?

MLS TV ratings were up across the board this year, but even the largest viewership of the year was under the average pull for the NHL. Hopefully the new dedicated time slots will further improve the numbers.

Minnesota is preparing to bid for an MLS team, but this chip implies they're already ready.

World

It isn't soccer, but one of Paul Allen's many other successful businesses were beset by tragedy last week. At Thursday's Portland Trailblazers game, a 67 year-old fan collapsed and passed away. She was honored with a single rose at her seat, as well as her name on the chests of the players she presumably loved.

The weight of expectations is heavy on the shoulders of Brooklyn Beckham, the fifteen year-old son of David Beckham, after being signed by Arsenal for the rest of the year.

Incredibly, the EPL actually made more in commercial revenue than the NFL last year.
