It's almost embarrassingly common for an overzealous announcer to proclaim a strike as a "Goal of the Year" candidate upon first viewing. They are looking for something to say and that is often the phrase that simply pops into their heads. Well, Ross Fletcher said no such thing after Obafemi Martins' scored that unbelievable goal against the San Jose Earthquakes. He didn't need to because it was that obvious.
There aren't a lot of players in the world who will even think of doing something like this. There are even fewer who can dream of pulling it off. Martins is one of those players.
Compared to the other three goals that made it to the finals, there's possibly an inclination to say that Martins' was somehow more lucky. That it's such a hard-to-execute goal that it almost falls into the fluke category. Don't be lulled into that thinking. Martins' goal was gorgeous in just about every way whether he could pull it off again is irrelevant. Now let's give it the honor it deserves.
