Garth Lagerwey apparently joining Sounders front office in some capacity

Chris Nicoll-USA TODAY Sports

Garth Lagerwey is set to join the Seattle Sounders front office in 2015. ESPN's Taylor Twellman broke the news, but Sounder at Heart has independently confirmed the move.

This would be the first significant change to the Sounders front office since the current group was assembled prior to the team joining MLS in 2009. Since then, Sigi Schmid has been head coach, Chris Henderson has been the sporting/technical director and Adrian Hanauer has been the general manager.

There has been a potentially glaring opening ever since the split from Seahawks, though: Team President. Hanauer had been effectively filling that role over the past year, but this move may suggest that he'd formally take on that title and cede more of the day-to-day management of the club to Lagerwey and Henderson. Lagerwey has been with Real Salt Lake since 2007, helping take them from one of the worst team's in league history to one of the most consistent.

The move comes as quite a surprise, as the Sounders' front office seemed to be stable and most seemed to think that if Lagerwey left Real Salt Lake it would be to Toronto FC or New York City FC.

We'll have more as the story develops.

UPDATE: Lagerwey has essentially confirmed that something is happening, although nothing is final.
