Ukraine moves United States friendly to Cyprus

For Seattle fans this means that you aren't getting Clint Dempsey back any earlier.

Safety concerns win out as the March 5th friendly between the United States and Ukraine will no longer be held in Ukraine. Earlier Tuesday the Ukraine Football Federation announced that they are holding the match in Cyprus.

With tensions still high during the transition of government phase the USSF was exploring alternates to playing in Ukraine. The least likely option was that the players would return to their respective club teams.

Instead Ukraine will still get will still play host nation, but not within their own country. Per the release from the UFF this was done at the request of the United States.

Dreams of a Clint Dempsey early return are over. He will instead return to Seattle shortly after the match is completed. He should start that game, unlike his recent run at Fulham. The move of host site also means that Brad Evans and maybe DeAndre Yedlin get a trip to Cyprus where the temps are currently in the low 80s.

This is the last FIFA international match day before the World Cup. It is likely to feature as close to the 23-man roster tournament as is healthy at the time.
