Sounders FC TV ratings trending up

A team that continually sets an attendance record could just be maxing out on its market penetration. For Seattle Sounders FC that is not true, instead their new TV package is setting ratings records.

Every couple of weeks Q13 sports director Aaron Levine gives a glimpse into the ratings of Seattle Sounders FC on the new television properties. From the data he gives the Q13/JoeTV contract this year is an early success. The ratings on JoeTV, the secondary station, are significantly higher than last year's ratings on KONG.

That highest locally rated match was on Q13 this year.

These ratings show a few things;

  1. Up despite dropping weekly magazine show
  2. Promos airing during sit-com reruns help
  3. Bar viewing doesn't hurt TV ratings
And maybe more importantly it shows that this market is not tapped out. People want more Sounders FC not less. That's true when you look at the expansion of radio coverage (listen to Seattle Soccer Talk on Tuesday at 7 PM), the expansion of Sounder at Heart readership (it's nearly doubled when compared to last year) and the evidence provided in the Nielsen 2013 Year in Sports Report.

With Sounders FC separating off from the Seahawks and launching their Fan Innovation Center one of the things they will need to continue doing to reach Joe Roth and Adrian Hanauer's ambitious goals of being a top club in the Americas is touch those people who have not yet connected to this club. There are clearly fans that do not attend home matches.

There are also soccer fans that are still more interested in clubs in England, Spain, Germany, Italy, Mexico, etc. These TV ratings are good. They are not an end point. They are a path.

Oh, and Q13 has the match on Saturday. So set your DVRs if you are going, or watch if you aren't.
