MLS Fantasy: Six players under $6 million

As you start to solidify your squad, these players should gain value while also providing spot starts.

The way I see it, the fantasy season begins in earnest in Week 5. Major League Soccer's participation in the CONCACAF Champions League-and the bye weeks it triggered-are a memory. Barring injuries and national team situations, you can once again count on the players from Sporting Kansas City, Los Angeles, and San Jose to be available on a weekly basis.

For me, that meant some roster adjustment. In order to add Landon Donovan, who thankfully played sparingly against Mexico, I juggled my lineup around and burned three transfers. It gave me an opportunity to add two undervalued players - Colorado's Vincente Sanchez and Chicago's Harrison Shipp - so I didn't mind too much.

As you make your adjustments this week, I hope this list of low-cost talent helps you. Most of you know about the Dylan Remicks and David Horsts of the world, so I tried to dig a little deeper.

Value (season)

Kellyn Acosta

FC Dallas

Thomas McNamara

Chivas USA

Sal Zizzo

Sporting Kansas City

Hector Jimenez

Columbus Crew

Quincy Amarikwa

Chicago Fire

Aaron Wheeler

Philadelphia Union

Kellyn Acosta: The 18-year-old Dallas homegrown defender has played all 180 minutes of the past two matches, picking up an assist for good measure. FCD have been one of the surprise teams of the early MLS season and the club has shown faith in Acosta getting forward. If you don't already own him, he is a nice pickup for your starting lineup or to stow on your bench.

Thomas McNamara: I love watching McNamara play. This will come off sounding like a back-handed compliment, but he doesn't look like he should be that good. However, he always manages to get himself in dangerous positions, as evidenced by the penalty he drew against New York last week. I do think Chivas USA's lack of depth will be their undoing and sap the value out of most of their fantasy players, but ride the wave while it lasts.

Sal Zizzo: With Sporting Kansas City out of the CCL, one can only expect their vaunted offense to get up to speed. Zizzo has started the past three matches and contributed two assists against Colorado. Provided he can keep his place in the lineup with Soony Saad and C.J. Sapong returning, he is a good add at a great price.

Hector Jimenez: The former Galaxy midfielder has been an integral cog for the Crew, starting all three matches. Wil Trapp is the Crew player who gets the most headlines, but Jimenez is $0.5m cheaper and is already a proven commodity at the MLS level.

Quincy Amarikwa: It is somewhat surprising he has found his way into the starting lineup, considering he never started for the Fire for the entire 2013 season. However, Chris Rolfe's departure has put Amarikwa and Harrison Shipp into the spotlight. Shipp has the slight edege in fantasy numbers thus far, but both make a quality speculative add. However, the fact that Amarikwa plays fantasy himself may push him over the edge for you.

Aaron Wheeler: Wheeler made the MLS Team of the Week as a central defender and looks to have a somewhat solid spot in the lineup after having gone the full 90 for two weeks in a row. It's a little odd having someone listed as a forward playing in the back line, but at $6.0 he's an excellent value, especially with Philadelphia's two-match week on the horizon.

Sounder at Heart fantasy league updates

Despite an off week (40 pts), Nick Edds's team "Nick" still holds down the top spot in the league with 273 points. However, there are a number of squads right on his tail, including Sporting Castiel, which posted 83 points last week.

In the SaH contributor head-to-head league. Dave still reigns supreme at a perfect 4-0-0.
