WoSo Wrapup: Reigns in Europe, Sounders Women vs SPU

Rapinoe knock one in, but Sermanni's out. Fishlock scores a trick, but Scotland are in with a shout. #rhymes

Here are a few tidbits of Reign news and some bonus Sounders Women news that I'll just wrap up into a single post.

Reign Roster Official

The Reign released their official 20-player roster for the 2014 season on Monday along with the rest of the teams in the league. There weren't any surprises. They announced the filling of their 20th and final spot with the Megan Brigman signing over a week ago.

UEFA World Cup Qualifying

Both Jess Fishlock and Kim Little were away this week playing for their respective countries in UEFA qualifiers for the 2015 World Cup. Fishlock scored a hat trick in Wales' 5-1 victory over Turkey on Friday and then today assisted the late equalizing goal in a 1-1 home draw with Ukraine. That goal could end up being huge, as Ukraine is the most likely team to contest for the second spot in Group 6 behind the dominant English team. Fishlock is now on her way back to Seattle for the season opener on Sunday.

Little got at least one assist (I missed the second goal) in Scotland's 2-0 win over Poland on Saturday. Early tomorrow they play at Bosnia & Herzegovina, who have yet to win a group game. Scotland is currently first in Group 4 narrowly ahead of world powerhouse Sweden, so they have a decent shot of making it to their first ever World Cup, at least via the second-place team playoffs.

US Women vs China (Times Two)

On Sunday the US Women beat China 2-0 in Colorado, shortly after which head coach Tom Sermanni lost his job. So I guess they should have won by more. Sydney Leroux played the full match and was part of an attack that created a ton of chances but couldn't put enough away. Megan Rapinoe came on as a sub and scored one of the goals directly off of a free-kick. The second game of the doubleheader is tomorrow in California under interim head coach Jill Ellis. The game will be on at 8pm on NBC Sports.

Sounders Women Friendly vs SPU

The W-League Sounders Women start their preseason with a Thursday friendly against SPU (who are just off getting knocked around by the Reign last weekend) at Interbay, between Magnolia and Queen Anne. Attendance will be free. The Jet City Aux — their supporters group — has a nice game preview here. The Sounders' college players won't start coming in until May, so this will mostly be a group of local players looking to make the team. So far the only players officially announced for the team are the UW's Megan Kufeld and Annie Sittauer and a pair of seniors from Elon University way over in North Carolina.
