Graphic: Sounders v. Union Matchup

A visual look at players to watch, team stats, and head-to-head results in Saturday's Sounders v. Union match-up.

The weekend is just around the corner. You know what that means? First, it means that rain and colder weather are expected. Of course. It's also time for another Sounders matchup graphic. Over the past two weeks, I've shared two versions of this graphic as Fanposts and received a few requests to make this a regular thing. So here we are!

Let's take a visual look at the players to watch and team stats for Saturday's match against the Philadelphia Union.

Interesting Stats

The Sounders and the Union both have 114 shots. But don't be fooled! The Union have played 9 games, the Sounders only 8. Despite playing one fewer game, however, the Sounders have 18 goals to the Union's 9.

The Strengths & Weaknesses section of the graphic comes from WhoScored.com. The teams look somewhat similar when compared this way, although the Sounders have been finishing scoring chances, while that's an obvious weakness for the Union. Some more good news: the Union are not great at defending counter attacks.

Last week, the Sounders were fourth in the MLS Power Rankings. Today? We're Number 1! We're Number 1!

With 5 draws, the Union are competing with the Timbers for the title of Draw City. I have no desire to get them closer to that title this weekend.

Other Items of Note

Last week, I complained because Lamar Neagle, Kenny Cooper, and Obafemi Martins had two goals each, which really messed with the layout of the graphic. This week, we have a new problem: Neagle, Dempsey, and Gonzalo Pineda all have three assists. Come on, guys. Help me out!

Did you see the comments on this Facebook graphic that the Union posted as a preview for Saturday's match? Ouch.

As always, let me know what other features or changes you'd like to see.
