The Seattle Sounders will be a bit short-handed for the next few weeks and possibly through June. Confirming earlier suspicions, Clint Dempsey, Brad Evans and DeAndre Yedlin were all named to the United States national team's provisional roster for the upcoming World Cup.
All 30 players named to the provisional roster will join Jurgen Klinsmann for a pre-World Cup training camp that starts on Wednesday at Stanford and runs until June 7 when the United States plays Nigeria in a friendly. The final 23-man World Cup roster is due to FIFA on June 2, but it's unclear how long players who don't make that cut will remain with the team.
Assuming all three Sounders remain with the USMNT until the final cut day, that would force them to miss three MLS matches (May 17, May 24 and May 31). Players who make the final World Cup roster would miss at least one more MLS game (June 7) and as many as four (June 28, July 5 and July 13).
Barring a massive surprise, this will mark the first time an active Sounder has made the World Cup. In the 2010 World Cup, Blaise Nkufo played for Switzerland but had yet to make his Sounders debut and Alvaro Fernandez played for Uruguay, but had not yet signed with MLS.
One notable snub from the preliminary roster was former Sounders forward Eddie Johnson, who was one of the key players during the United States' qualification run. Klinsmann said Johnson's recent comments that were critical of his D.C. United teammates did not factor into the decision.
Although Johnson didn't make it, there were 15 other MLS players who did get named to the preliminary roster.
