Stefan Frei is becoming an increasingly divisive figure. Even before his gaffe on Saturday, there were rumblings among Seattle Sounders fans that maybe a change was in order. After his seemingly senseless clearance into the middle of the field that led to Gershon Koffie's goal, those calls got even louder.
But there are plenty of people, and seemingly Sigi Schmid is among them, who look at his larger body of work and think Frei is still the Sounders' best goalkeeper. As evidence, they'll point to any number of saves he made against the Vancouver Whitecaps, one of which was even nominated for Save of the Week.
Say what you will about Frei's growing penchant for allowing the odd bad goal, but he's also done pretty well when called upon. Any one of his four saves probably could have been nominated for Save of the Week, but his stop of Koffie on the game's final play was deservedly the one nominated. Especially in a week without a truly outstanding save, do the right thing and give Frei a boost.
