The Seattle Sounders will face the LA Galaxy on Monday without their top defensive player. Chad Marshall was apparently in a car accident on Saturday and is experiencing back spasms. The Sounders did not immediately give a timeline for his return. Jalil Anibaba and Zach Scott started at center back in his place.
Since joining the Sounders in an offseason trade with the Columbus Crew, Marshall has looked every bit like the player who won back-to-back MLS Defensive Player of the Year awards in 2008-09. Marshall ranks No. 9 in all of MLS in duels won, fifth in interceptions, fourth in blocked shots and ninth in clearances. The soccer statistics site Squawkagives him the second highest overall performance score in the league, behind only LA Galaxy forward Robbie Keane.
Up until now, Marshall had also been enjoying one of his healthiest seasons of his career. Marshall had only missed one game up until now, a 2-2 tie at Vancouver on May 24. He's been one of the main reasons the Sounders have allowed fewer goals than all but four other MLS teams.
