By the time the first whistle blows on the Seattle Sounders v Portland Timbers Lamar Hunt US Open Cup match Wednesday night the opponent and location will be known for the semifinal round. The victor would host the winner of the Atlanta Silverbacks (NASL) v Chicago Fire quarterfinal match per today's announcement from US Soccer. Hosting rights for the September 30th or October 1st final will be announced at a later date.
Sounders FC again won a coin flip (though with the higher cost of hosting the semis it is possible one or both potential opponents did not bid) and will play in their tiny Tukwila fortress. This all assumes a win. If Seattle loses to Portland then the Timbers would host the next round at Providence Park.
An intriguing sidenote to the Atlanta-Chicago contest is that Atlanta is hosting. They get that advantage while playing against a team up a division. They also will be without Coach Eric Wynalda and his top assistant as both were ejected from the win over Colorado.
Seattle is looking to earn their fourth US Open Cup in just six years a path through Starfire where they've never lost is just the medicine for that little bit of history.
