Obafemi Martins has had some good days with Seattle Sounders FC. There were his two goals against the Chicago Fire in just 42 minutes. Two goals against D.C. United last year were pretty nifty as well. Sunday night though, it was not just his two goals and his assist. He had a complete attacking game as well.
WhoScored didn't have him as the top rated player, but he still earned a 9.16 in their rating system. He racked up a bunch of numbers that they like. His second goal may show what kind of day he had.
He stumbled through Portland's defense. On most days, with most players that is not a goal. Today, for Oba that wasn't just a goal, it was the dagger that ended all hope for Timbers fans. Martins didn't really know how it happened.
"I can't really remember," Martins said. "I almost fell, but with a little bit of luck I was able to stay on my feet and push the ball in front of me."
Martins' two and Clint's one put Seattle and LA as the only teams with two players with 10 or more goals. Bradley Wright-Phillips does have Oba+Clint goals though. With Barrett the Sounders have three players in the top 26. Barrett is second to only BWP in goals per 90 minutes played.
It was a fortuitous day, but also a day when the powers of Oba were on full display.
Likkit will have a full gif post (with a third angle) as time permits.
