Sounders vs. Real Salt Lake: Andy Rose delivers late winner

Lamar Neagle's glorious strike is the game's highlight, though.

Just when it looked as though the Seattle Sounders were going to be forced to settle for a frustrating tie, Andy Rose came to the rescue. The Sounders midfielder scored the game-winner in the final minute of added time, blasting a shot from about 12 yards out past Nick Rimando. The goal gave the Sounders a 3-2 win, pushed them to 54 points on the season and gives them a four-point lead in the Supporters' Shield race.

Rose's finish came after several players collided in the penalty area, allowing him to settle the ball and take a calm strike.

Late as it may have been, it was a deserving result. The Sounders had the run of play for much of the match, despite falling behind 1-0, and Real Salt Lake's equalizer came off a deflected shot that was really their only quality look in the second half.

RSL did off on the the front and had the run of play for the first 15 minutes or so, but the Sounders ended up with the first quality chance. Chad Marshall nodded a ball down to the feet of Martins, who had snuck in behind the RSL defense. But the striker's quick shot struck the the crossbar.

RSL capitalized on the miss and were able to get on the scoreboard first when Javier Morales was allowed to ghost into the penalty area to take a pass from Luke Mulholland. With no one within a few yards of him, Morales beat Frei to the far post for a 1-0 lead in the 30th minute.

The Sounders quickly responded on an absolutely amazing strike by Lamar Neagle. The midfielder ended a 10-match scoreless drought with a left-footed blast from about 25 yards out that beat Rimando in the upper 90 in the 38th minute.

The Sounders were able to seize the momentum and took the lead in the 43rd minute when Clint Dempsey split a pair of defenders with a sublime pass to put Obafemi Martins one-on-one with Rimando. Although Rimando got a hand on Martins' shot, it wasn't enough to keep him from scoring his 13th goal of the season.

RSL was able to equalize in the 50th minute when Joao Plata's shot from just outside the penalty area deflected off Osvaldo Alonso's head and beat Frei to the far post.

At that point, RSL seemed mostly content to dig in and play for the tie. But when Martins was able to chase down Brad Evans' long pass, Nat Borchers was forced to pull him down from behind and was given a straight red card in the 70th minute.
