National TV Games:
New England Revolution at Sporting KC
NBC Sports Network, 5 PM Friday
Philadelphia Union at DC United
NBC Sports Network, Noon Saturday
Three Big Storylines:
- Toronto host the Timbers in a match that sees two squads desperate to get above the red line (Toronto) or stay above the red line (Portland). Coming into the season both fanbases would have scoffed at the notion that they are fighting for 5th place in their respective conferences.
- The Eastern Conference Playoff Race is really heating up. Friday's NBC Sports game features Sporting hosting the Revs mostly for seeding implications, while there are nine teams still alive for the five playoff spots. Philly visiting DC, also on NBC Sports, can see DC get closer to locking up the #1 seed in the East or the Union jumping above the red line. Interestingly, not a single Eastern Conference team has locked up a playoff spot and Houston is lurking with a game in hand preparing their annual fall playoff push.
- ESPN is thrilled to have the Galaxy hosting the Red Bulls in primetime on Sunday night, the Thierry Henry retirement rumors are continuing to swirl while Landon Donovan is now three assists shy of the All Time MLS assists record. Donovan has three matches against defenses not led by Chad Marshall to secure the record before he also retires. All eyes will be on LA on Sunday night, likely a great showcase for the league.
When it comes to Sounders rooting interests, the summary is easy. This weekend we are all Red Bulls. After the Sounders match against Slumpbuster FC at 1 PM Saturday, keep an eye on the Whitecaps to take points off RSL in Vancouver at 4 PM on MLS Live. RSL are five points back of the Sounders and Galaxy, but here is their five match run in: @Vancouver, @Chivas, San Jose, @Portland & Chivas. RSL is officially lurking in the Supporter's Shield race.
Great matchups across the league all weekend; enjoy your Week 28 Gamethread.
