Obafemi Martins is in the midst of the most productive season in Seattle Sounders history. With four matches left to play, he's already got the single-season team records with 15 goals and 25 combined goals and assists. He's also within shouting distance of becoming just the third MLS player since 2001 to have 30 combined goals and assists. Any reasonable person should have him on their short-list for MVP candidates.
In the meantime, though, there's an award to be contest for the league's best player in September. Martins has really come alive this month, scoring five goals and adding an assist. Although it won't count in the competition, Martins also had a goal in the U.S. Open Cup while eliminating any doubts that his end-of-season slump last year was entirely up to exhaustion.
Martins would become the second Sounders player to win the award this year after Clint Dempsey won it in April. Voting is not yet open, but should be here.
