SB Nation MLS Mock Draft - pick 40 Sounders take Spencer Richey

Seattle is in nearly desperate need of at least three keepers, and that's just for their seasons (1st team & S2). In training camp they often have a few more. Expect them to pick a couple this year, maybe even the local kid.

Rating keepers is hard. They fail out more often than other draft picks, but that does not mean Seattle Sounders FC should ignore them in the draft. The team needs a lot of keepers and there is one available with which they are intimately familiar. With the 40th pick in the SB Nation MLS Mock Draft Spencer Richey joined the club.

Richey entered his first senior year as one of the nation's top prospects. A massive injury meant that year went to waste. He returned for a second senior year, which was probably his worst. At one point the University of Washington keeper was expected to be in the top half of the first round. Now, he's falling.

That provides the perfect circumstances for Sounders FC. They know that his recent performance is not related to his true talent level. Coming back from a broken leg is a big deal. Last season he did put up a 75.8 save percentage with four shutouts and a mediocre 1.23 GAA.

Overall his numbers are great.

Richey is a Seattle native who spent several years at the Bradenton Academy with the US Youth National Team. He went to the U-17 World Cup and was on the U-20 US roster. Other teams may pass on Richey. Seattle should not.
