Obafemi Martins joins Sounders training

Kelvin Kuo-USA TODAY Sports

There was a familiar face at Seattle Sounders training on Wednesday: Obafemi Martins. After missing the first few days of preseason camp, Martins was back with his teammates. Martins wasn't at full speed and wasn't a full participant, but that seemed to be of little concern to the Sounders.

"He's an experienced pro and he's been through a lot of preseasons," Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid said. "He knows how to get himself ready and we want him to make sure he's ready to go. We've kinda let him roll into these last couple days of practice. He'll do what he needs to do to get ready from here."

This has been pretty common practice with how the Sounders treat Martins, mostly trusting the 14-year professional to get ready on his own schedule. Last year, that kind of treatment allowed Martins to play in a career high 35 of 38 matches, including playoffs. He also set career highs with 17 goals and 13 assists.
