Three Big Storylines:
- Friday night sees D.C. United host New York City FC in a game that will likely be very rainy but avoid the worst of Hurricane Joaquin that is heading to the East Coast over the weekend. Or maybe heading out to sea? NYCFC have three games to play and are five points below the red line. DC United were one of the favorites for the Supporters' Shield as recently as August but now have just one point from their last six played. DC's bad run of form started with a loss in Yankee Stadium to this same NYCFC team on August 13th.
- The Portland Timbers play host to a Sporting KC squad on Saturday night (7:30 PM, MLS Live and Root Sports in the Northwest) that might still be hungover from their US Open Cup Victory on Wednesday night. Sporting only have five points from their last eight played while Portland are only one point back of Sporting for 5th place in the Western Conference. Both teams are in danger of being passed by the San Jose Earthquakes this weekend with a loss and a Quakes win.
- Another Sunday Triple-Header on National TV for MLS that ends with the marquee matchup of the weekend the Seattle Sounders hosting the LA Galaxy (this is not the gamethread you are looking for) sees two Western Conference matches to open up the day. FC Dallas hosts the Houston Dynamo in a Texas showdown. FC Dallas has a real shot to move into the top 2 in the West with a win while Houston are only three points back of Portland for the last playoff spot heading into the weekend. Prior to the Sounders game, FS1 will open up with the decider in the Rockie Mountain Cup as the Colorado Rapids host Real Salt Lake. Both teams are virtually eliminated from the playoffs, so this is their cup. The Rapids win the cup with a win or draw while RSL will want to keep their slim playoff hopes alive and take home the cup with a win.
From a Sounders Point of View:
Three Points. Just get three points. Depending on results this weekend the Sounders could be as high as second or as low as fifth in the Western Conference on Sunday night.
If you are still looking at the Supporters' Shield, hopefully the Chicago Fire can get the win behind their new coaching staff and front office over the New England Revolution and the Columbus Crew win at Red Bull Arena over the New York Red Bulls.
In the West, we are essentially cheering for a draw in Portland v SKC, the San Jose Earthquakes to extend the Vancouver Whitecaps bad run of form and Houston to beat FC Dallas.
