Only a minute or two after Gyasi Zardes equalized for the LA Galaxy, the Seattle Sounders appeared to storm back into the lead. Andreas Ivanschitz picked up what appeared to be a loose ball, dribbled in and scored with a shot off the far post. Referee Jair Marrufo even pointed to the center circle, indicating it was a good goal.
But the Galaxy immediately stormed the assistant referee, who had waved his flag on the initial Clint Dempsey header that started the sequence. After conferring with the assistant, Marrufo waved off the goal.
In real time, it did look like Dempsey was off, although it also looked like Robbie Keane may have purposefully played the ball back. The Galaxy definitely acted like the play had been called dead and everyone but Ivanschitz was acting that way too.
But as this replay shows, it appears as though Marrufo originally waved off the flag and purposefully allowed play to continue. Judge for yourself:
