Three Big Storylines:

  1. This is a Sounder centric site, so let's start with the Sounder storyline.  Your Captain for today's match is Clint Dempsey.  Dempsey will be earning his 112th cap.  Dempsey played 68 minutes in the 3-2 loss at Chile in the January 28th match.  Sounders HGP DeAndre Yedlin was released from Tottenham specifically in order to gain match fitness, so expect him to start as well.  In the game against Chile, Yedlin played 90 minutes as a wing in the USA's 3-5-2 formation.
  2. It's a friendly, so results do not matter right?  Well that might typically be the case, but there is a growing discontent with the USMNT's extended trend of losing games from winning positions since the end of the World Cup.  The USMNT has beaten Panama five times in a row and is 11-1-2 all time against the current FIFA ranked 55th team in the world.  There will be pressure on the players to get a result.  As a result of that same bad string of results the USMNT is down to 27 in the current FIFA rankings.
  3. Lastly we have Fitnessgate.  What is Fitnessgate you ask?  It is the entirely new word that I made up to articulate the current fervor between USMNT manager Jurgen Klinsmann and the soccer media in this country.  Klinsmann continues to complain about the fitness level of the USMNT players, particularly as they come into the January camp.  Klinsmann is not happy with MLS's 34 game schedule and continues to campaign for a switch to the European calendar.  ESPN has a three hour broadcast window for this match, expect the issue to be addressed again in the pre-game show and broadcast.  There are many things to complain about in the state of the USMNT program, but picking fitness is a curious choice as that is the one thing the USMNT has traditionally been known for.  Thus Fitnessgate was formed.

From a Sounders point of view, we just want Clint Dempsey to exit the game around the 65th minute healthy.  Dempsey started against Chile in an attacking midfield role in the USA's 3-5-2 formation.  At the conclusion of this game, Dempsey should join the Sounders as they continue to prepare for the MLS season.  Yedlin should get 90 minutes and after the match fly back to London where he will rejoin his new Tottenham teammates who play at Liverpool on Tuesday and are coming off a quality 2-1 win over Arsenal on Saturday.
