Brian Schmetzer will get his third opportunity to serve as Seattle Sounders head coach, filling in today for Sigi Schmid. Just a few hours before kickoff for their match against the San Jose Earthquakes, the Sounders revealed that Schmid would be absent in order to attend his son Erik's wedding in Southern California.
This is just the third match Schmid has missed in his seven seasons as Sounders head coach. In 2009, Schmid missed a match against the Houston Dynamo -- coincidentally also coached by Dominic Kinnear -- in order to attend his son Kurt's wedding. In 2012, Schmid was suspended for a match against FC Dallas. The Sounders won both of those matches.
