We all need a distraction after the Sounders match today. I suggest reading what happened across the rest of MLS this weekend then watching either the Reign FC or Sounders 2 game to forget about today's game.
FC Dallas 0 - Colorado Rapids 4: First thing is that Colorado finally scored. It took five games but they finally got themselves on the board and they decided to score all the goals they had allotted for the first half of the season in one night. The second takeaway is that FC Dallas is sliding away. They started out with nine points out of nine, since then they only have taken one of the last nine points. I think it is safe to say, FC Dallas as the West's #1 are over.
New England Revolution 0 - Columbus Crew 0: This game was not special in anyway. Jermaine Jones played his first minutes of 2015, playing the first half. In traditional fashion, Jones got a good shot off, ran the midfield, and earned a yellow card. Big takeaway here is that the two teams combined for six yellow cards, yet no reds today.
Philadelphia Union 2 - New York City FC 1: Congrats to any Philly fan or anyone cheering for Sebastian LeToux because Philly got their first win of the year. It took a very late, 92nd minute, goal from Vincent Nogueira. He knocks home a loose ball from the top of the box. Conor Casey it appears commits a foul but no call means Philly gets three points. I think it is a problem in the Man City organization with both MC and NYCFC falling week after week. Zach Pfeffer was credit with a "butt goal" for Philly's first but Eric Ayuk Mbu celebrated as if it was his anyway and he can compete with Obafemi for best flips.
DC United 2 - New York Red Bulls 2: The original "New York" team should be the happier of the two from this weekend. DC is a good team and sits at the top of the Eastern Conference right now but thanks 68th and 90th minute goals for NYRB, they split the points. Lloyd Sam seems to have DC's number with yet another goal against them.
Houston Dynamo 3 - Montreal Impact 0: Montreal faced something we know all too well, they played better but the scoreboard did not reflect that. Houston must feel great after last week having that happen, as they arguably outplayed us for parts of the match, but they found a way to win. Houston scored good goals and more than doubled their season total for goals.
Sporting Kansas City 0 - Real Salt Lake 0: When two teams ahead of you in the table play and both play physical, hard games week in and week out, watching them split the points is perfect. It was the cliche, tale of two halves. SKC controlled the first, RSL controlled the second but neither could find the goal. The kicker, the teams combined for five yellow cards with four going to RSL yet they only combined for one shot on target.
San Jose Earthquakes 1 - Vancouver Whitecaps 0: San Jose does it again. The team we all love to hate again upsets the giant. Sure Vancouver-San Jose the past few years has been a battle of possible playoff teams, if even, but Vancouver went into the match with the most dangerous forward, Octavio Rivero, and the best record in the league. Luckily for them, they lose but still manage to lead the league by three points. Former Sounder Sanna Nyassi was the lone goal scorer with the 75th minute winner.
Portland Timbers 0 - Orlando City SC 2: Another week, another Portland lose. Maybe not entirely fair to Portland but I mean come on, you lost at home which you claim to be a fortress. Kaká missed a PK in the 85th but Diego Chara was called for encroachment and unlike the other football it is a re-kick and not a five yard penalty. Kaká did not think twice and nicely converts the second time. Cyle Larin is credited with the game winner with the #1 MLS Superdraft pick scoring his first MLS goal.
Los Angeles Galaxy 1 - Sounders FC 0: I really do not want to rehash this one. If you have not read the recap yet, start there. Or pretend that the game did not happen. We played hard. We shot, a lot. But everything went to Penedo and that's how it ended, with Penedo getting a shutout.
Overall the Sounders are now outside of playoff position. I'm not worried and nor should you be but that does not change the fact that we are sadly on the outside looking in but hey, so are the Galaxy.
Sounders 2 played a hard fought match needing to come back against Timbers 2 but as you have probably read by now, they pulled it off with a beautiful goal by Giuliano Frano. It was the first time that they did not score four goals but they still took all three points.
On goal differential the Sounders would be top in both the conference and the USL as a whole but currently we are in second because we have not changed our name to A Seattle Sounders FC 2 in order to be alphabetically ahead of Arizona United SC. Four teams are undefeated currently but only three have won every match, with Charleston joining Arizona and Seattle. If we continue this trend, expect to be very happy at the end of the season.
