By the numbers: Sounders create shots, but no goals

Kirby Lee-USA TODAY Sports

Soccer is a funny game. Teams often play poorly, but find a way to win. Sometimes, they play well, but can't buy a goal. After setting season highs with shots (14) and shots on goal (10), the Sounders were the latter. Unfortunately, that's just how it goes sometimes.

0: Five games into the season and the Sounders still don't have a goal from anyone other than Obafemi Martins or Clint Dempsey.

2: According to a guy who understands statistics more than I do, the Sounders "should have" scored two goal based on the chances they created.

3: The first time the Sounders visited the LA Galaxy was in 2009. In the Sounders' 10 road games (including playoffs) against the Galaxy since, they've claimed just three points and haven't won again. The 10-game road winless run is twice as long as against any other Sounders opponent.

5: Lamar Neagle had not even taken a shot in his first four matches. He fired off six in this one, including five on frame. That's the second most shots on goal for any Sounders player ever, but the most without scoring at least one. He also had three key passes, including a through ball that put Martins in on goal and another that gave Andy Rose a shot from about six yards out.

10: Jaime Penedo made 10 saves against the Sounders, a record for an opposing goalkeeper. The Sounders 10 shots on frame was also the third most in franchise history, but the most without scoring a goal.

11: Results aside, the Sounders have struggled to create chances most of the year, but they were credited with 11 in this game. That's more than they've had in any previous game this year.

27: Chad Marshall and Brad Evans have been among the best aerial defenders -- at least statistically -- this year, but the duo won just 27 percent (3 of 11) of their aerial duels in this one.

152: Cristian Roldan may have been the 15th player selected in the MLS SuperDraft but he's played in four straight games and logged 152 minutes, fourth most among MLS rookies.

180: The Sounders have yet to score in 180 minutes on the road.
