Whatever remote chance there was of Stefan Frei joining the Montreal Impact for some kind of emergency loan ahead of Wednesday's CONCACAF Champions League final appears to be gone. The Impact have acquired Indy Eleven goalkeeper Kristian Nicht on a transfer for an undisclosed amount of money. The language in the release suggests this is a permanent transfer, as opposed to the previous loan stint Nicht had spent with the Impact during the quarterfinals of the CCL.
While this seemingly closes the book on what had become a rather crazy few days filled with wild speculation about short-term loans, what we can surmise is that the Impact were really trying to make something happen. That something apparently included reaching out to several MLS general managers about acquiring their goalkeepers. Sounder at Heart confirmed the Sounders were one of the teams contacted.
Although none of the teams were apparently interested in making such a deal -- including the Sounders -- CONCACAF had been willing to go along with it. It remains unclear if MLS would have allowed it.
