Fun slate of games this weekend. Lots of goals by teams you did not expect to score them, except for Colorado who is still goalless. Sounders took all three points which is good, but so did some of the teams sitting above us in the table. The most important event from this weekend is not the points but the tissue scandal in Portland.
Orlando City SC 0 - DC United 1: DC is getting off to great start. They have not looked good in most games but they have been able to win three of their first four games, so they are doing something right. It took a stoppage time free kick from Luis Silva to do it but it was all DC needed. Chris Rolfe almost got them on the board in the 45th with a wicked volley but missed just wide.
Chicago Fire 3 - Toronto FC 2: Same old Toronto? This year the defense is still bad but at least they can score goals. That is something, right? On paper, Chicago is the worse team. In the standings they are the worse team. But Toronto has not learned how to play defense because it turns out Jozy Altidore and and Sebastian Giovinco are only helpful when their team has the ball. Shaun Maloney and Harry Shipp took control after going down 2-1 and willed Chicago to a win.
Colorado Rapids 0 - New England Revolution 2: It is actually comical at this point how anemic the Colorado offense is. The Rapids surprisingly got five shots on target but staying true to this season's goal of being the first team to be shutout for an entire season, they had all of them saved. Juan Agudelo's goal was a beauty and marked the first given up by Clint Irwin this season.
Sounders FC 1 - Houston Dynamo 0: Obafemi Martins scored. He back flipped. We went to 10 men. We won anyway. Check out the recap for a much more in depth discussion and quotes. Just remember, we brought home all three points.
Vancouver Whitecaps 2 - Los Angeles Galaxy 0: Good news going into next week, LA is vulnerable. Bad news, they may be motivated after the beat down by Vancouver. Every Whitecap played a complete match while the Galaxy did not. I know that the Galaxy always pick it up part way through the season but until Gerrard comes this team is looking weak and just lost on the field. Octavio Rivero scored again, giving him four goals in five games for Vancouver and is finally providing a consistent scoring option for the 'Caps.
Portland Timbers 3 - FC Dallas 1: This game can be summed up in a few points. 1. Portland somehow did not draw a game. 2. Tissue Gate is all that people will remember from it. 3. Dallas is falling apart. Okay maybe the last one is not true but with a draw and a lose in their last two games it is possible. They only took six shots, three on goal, and let Portland do pretty much whatever Darlington Nagbe wanted to do. If last year is any indication on this year, Portland will go back to drawing matches and Dallas will continue a downward slide.
San Jose Earthquakes 0 - Real Salt Lake 1: This was one boring game. Javier Morales was the lone goal scorer in this match. Salt Lake just does not look confident after losing a big handful of starters from last year. Plata was out as well but there is just something missing. San Jose is not a great team and appear to be happy to just go play for a chance to attend their outdoor bar. If Morales does his thing once a game though, they could make the playoffs. Or something like that.
Sporting Kansas City 3 - Philadelphia Union 2: Just go watch this game, if you have not. It was the most entertaining and ridiculous game I have seen from KC and Philly. All five goals were from set pieces, leading to Alexi Lalas calling it a "set piece orgy". Philly blew a wide open shot with about five minutes left. This led to two stoppage time goals, one by Jalil Anibaba, for Sporting securing a win and preventing Philly from get their first win of the season. This game had a goal line decision for Philly and multiple goals called back for SKC. Just go watch it, trust me it is worth it. Krisztian Nemeth, as of right now, is being given credit for the game winner. Take a look, is it a Nemeth goal or a Philly own goal?
That wraps up the MLS games this week. Two five goal games, no draws, and a lot of crazy endings. With Sporting getting the two late goals and the win, Sounders fall from 4th to 5th in the standings but we are still a playoff team and the Galaxy are not.
Sounders 2 did not play this week, but a few teams did. S2 sits in 3rd in the Western Conference on alphabetical order, I am not kidding you, according to the USL Standings. We lead Timbers2 by a goal differentiation of three and over Arizona United by four. Charleston Battery is the leader with nine points through three matches, while we only have six points in two matches.
