Major Link Soccer: Brad Friedel's failed academy

Portland wants to take Boise, Kelyn Rowe at 100 games, and pepper spray shenanigans.

Seattle

Don Ruiz got the inside information on fan heckling in MLS from the Sounders' two main keepers Thursday, and you might be surprised to know that RSL fans are the worst in the league. But as Stefan Frei says: "You win the game and you can just turn around and just pump your fist. They've got no response to that: You just won the game and beat them. That's usually pretty sweet."

Seattle fell rather precipitously in RSL Soapbox's aggregate power rankings, and they are neck and neck with this weekend's opponent, Vancouver.

Speaking of the Whitecaps, here's a tactical preview of the match from the Sounders FC site.

There's a possibility the Sounders will have to take on their other Cascadia rivals while not at their strongest once again, as Obafemi Martins is undergoing some x-rays. Sigi Schmid won't say what bone, but I think it's just an elaborate ruse, and Oba is just being randomly x-rayed to throw off Vancouver's game plan.

Today I learned that if Chad Marshall had his way he would wear Chuck Taylor All Stars on the pitch.

The MLS broadcast deals continue to roll in. This time it's an online streaming agreement for mainland China through Letv.

We aren't the only site with badass and amusing trailers for our upcoming games! At least, not anymore. Check out Once a Metro's "Classic FC Dallas theme song"

For some terrible reason, the Portland Timbers and Thorns organizations are expanding their youth soccer partnerships to the non-Oregon state of Idaho. Is Boise in danger? This aggression will not stand, man.

Rio Tinto stadium will be host to CONCACAF olympic qualifying matches, specifically the semifinals, finals and third-place game this October.

Los Angeles Football Club doesn't have too much right now (except money), but now something they do have is a Chief Operating Officer. Carl Schloessman is a former sales and marketing executive for Live Nation.

The problem with stadium construction timelines slipping behind is that sometimes it means a long road trip for a team to start a season, instead of starting off with a bang on opening day. DC United's stadium may not be ready until the 2018 season, and Black and Red United is sorta ok with that.

It's a little hard to believe, Federal Way's own Kelyn Rowe just hit 100 career MLS appearances. The young Revolution player admits he still has a long way to go.

No matter what you think of Bruce Arena, he certainly has a point that the new "discovery list" mechanism is not a perfect system. Here are some ideas to improve it.

NASL and USL

USL would like to be taken seriously, please, and part of that plan is to have all teams playing in soccer-first facilities by 2020.

The NASL is making a push to expand with more Canadian teams, with Hamilton, Ontario coming up first.

World

Did you know Brad Friedel allegedly went bankrupt by starting and operating a soccer academy in his home state? Here's the sad story of a good idea gone wrong.

A 21-year-old player from the lower leagues of Argentina has died in a very unfortunate and seemingly preventable way, after he collided headfirst with a concrete wall just off the edge of the pitch.

I guess if you really hate the opposing team, one thing to do is to is pepper spray the players en masse as they return to the pitch after halftime. No, that is never a thing to do, actually.
