Remember that bit about Obafemi Martins returning to the Seattle Sounders as early as this week? Probably should put a cork in that.
A day after giving at least some hope for Martins playing against Sporting Kansas City on Saturday, Sounders head coach Sigi Schmid walked that back and now says his forward is "unlikely" to play.
That's not necessarily the most shocking development, nor is it the end of the world. While the Sounders are undoubtedly a better team with Martins on the pitch -- they are 23-10-4 with him starting as opposed to 3-3-1 without him starting since the start of last year -- they are coming off one of their best performances of the season. Making sure Martins is fully fit before bringing him back to the field -- especially against a physical team like Sporting KC -- would seem to trump any kind of immediate benefit his presence would have.
