Major Link Soccer - Open Cup Action

Local teams clash, MLS affiliates fall, and Miami finally lands a professional team

John Geliebter-USA TODAY Sports

Clint Dempsey has scored a goal or an assist in his last 10 games. This weekend he will have a chance to join the current 3-way tie in MLS for the longest streak of this type.

After finally breaking out of the unthinkable label of "The lesser Chad", Chad Barrett is ready to again step into chasm left by an injured Oba and keep moving forward.

S2 seemingly went out of their way last night to keep their US Open Cup match exciting, after taking an early lead they ended up needing extra time to beat the Kitsap Pumas.

This match wasn't streamed online, so you are limited to only selected highlights such as this one of the Pumas being threatening:

US Open Cup

The US Open Cup second round was in full swing last night with 20 matches being played. For full coverage I recommend checking out TheCup.US which just saw a major redesign in preparation for the tournament.

Several MLS affiiliated teams competed last night, starting with the Real Monarchs who bested the Long Island Rough Riders of the USL-PDL by a score of 1-0.

Other MLS affiliates didn't fair so well as Seattle and Salt Lake City. The New York Red Bulls II lost their first ever US Open Cup match to another team from Jersey, the Jersey Express 1-0 and the LA Galaxy II fell to Ventura County Fusion 2-1 in stoppage time.

Possible future MLS team Sacramento Republic made the US Open Cup look easy. They got to celebrate a Emrah Klimenta hat trick on their way to beating Sonoma County FC 4-2

CA Open Cup

Meanwhile, the Canada's own Open Cup equivalent (The Amway Canadian Championship) also moved forward last night. The Vancouver Whitecaps, clearly still reeling from their weekend defeat, managed to just scrape by FC Edmonton and earn their way to the final.

After having their game canceled last weekend, Sporting Kansas City made use of their extra rest to run rampant over New England 4-2 in the only MLS league game played last night.

US Soccer

Miami has finally found it's way into launching an expansion team, but maybe not the one we've been waiting for. The NASL has officially announced  Miami FC.

Whether this announcement is a show of strength of weakness may still be up to interpretation.

The Women's World Cup in Canada is quickly approaching. Fox Soccer has just released their full broadcast schedule for the tournament (PDF).

The bad news for the Qatar World Cup keeps growing. With sponsors starting to speak out, FIFA may have to start thinking about financial impact.

David Letterman retired last night. While he's never pretended to be a soccer fan, did take the time to compile his "Top 10" soccer moments.
