Sounders 2 at Portland Timbers 2: Preview and Two Questions

Mike Russell / Sounder at Heart

Over the next few days S2 will face T2 twice. The first match sends Seattle Sounders FC 2 on the road down to Merlo Field. Seattle's second team is poor on the road and the Portland Timbers 2 are undefeated. Each side will be looking ahead to their Open Cup match in Tukwila next Wednesday at 1 PM.

S2 will be short Oalex Anderson, who is off with his national team. But they won't have the stricter international roster limitations of the Open Cup and the 1st team's caution in loans. Still, Ezra has yet to lead his side to a road victory. A win tonight would force Portland even further below the line and keep S2 in contention for the USL Commissioner's Cup. S2 is currently five points out of first (5-3-1, 16 pts) and have the league's best offense.

Portland is seventh in the West (3-3-2, 11 pts) with the 9th best offense, but with a strong defense in the lower league that sees so many goals. The match starts at 7 PM. The stream will be on YouTube with Portland's announcing team on the call.

Kevin from StumptownFooty answers Two Questions about T2.

SaH: What player is having a breakout/should-be-in-MLS-18 performance?

STF: Kharlton Belmar has been a revelation in scoring. Now it is at the USL level against USL defenses, but for us down here it is pretty nice to just see a consistent goal scoring threat with our own eyes. His speed is truly something to behold and the fact that he can run defenses down in the 85th minute just as well as he does in the 5th minute is something that hopefully gets him an MLS spot with the Timbers next season. Lots of people have wanted to see him bumped up to the first team already just because he can score. But he is on a T2 contract so the idea should be to get him a full season of USL development and then see what they should do in the offseason

SaH: Any high profile players going to be down on rehab assignment?

STFWill Johnson is back with the first team, so he has finished up his rehab time with T2. Outside of that, the only two players I know for sure that should be missing will be attacking midfielder Fatawu Safiu who got called up to the Ghana U-23 Mens team. They have a match tomorrow and again on June 1st. So he won't be seen in the match tonight or Wednesday. And Santiago Biglieri is likely injured. He got his first start against the Michigan Bucks but was subbed out around the 30th minute due to injury.

This league match will be a preview of the much more important Open Cup game on Wednesday the 27th at 1 PM.
