Seattle Sounders FC pounded in insurance runs New York City FC tied the game in the 56th minute. Mehdi Ballouchy's game-tying goal was the last moments of play for him, and the last time that NYCFC looked dominant for more than a few moments. Stefan Frei saved the match when City tried to rally late, but the two goals by Obafemi Martins and one by Clint Dempsey proved insurmountable by the young expansion side. Oba and Clint also had an assist. Marco Pappa collected two helpers. The physical match saw four yellows for New York and three for Seattle. Two of NYC's yellows went to Kwame Watson-Siriboe who forced the Blues to play down a man for the final few minutes.
Obafemi Martins scored the first goal of the match in the 22nd minute when Marco Pappa sprung him into space.
In the first half NYCFC peppered Stefan Frei from distance. The Sounders gave those opportunities up while intercepting most of the passes into more dangerous areas. City was definitely more aggressive than Seattle.
After half the Blues again were more aggressive starting their attempts on goal quickly with Frei and Remick saving Seattle twice in just five minutes. In the 54th Mehdi Ballouchy finally cracked the code to Seattle's defense. After his game-tying goal he was immediately subbed off for David Villa to enter.
Clint sliced through the City defense when they foolishly allowed him to stand about 17 yards from goal and call his shot. His 58th minute goal regained the lead for Seattle. The insurance run in the 66th came from a long period of possession that ended with Clint and Oba confirming that they are still drift compatible.
That was an 18-pass goalscoring sequence from Seattle. I believe that's the longest in @MLS this year.— Matthew Doyle (@MLSAnalyst) May 4, 2015
Sounders move to 5-2-1 +7 just one point back from the five way tie for the Supporters' Shield lead.
If anything can be taken away from the match it is that Seattle looked better when New York inserted the legendary David Villa. With more space available the Sounders' counter was unstoppable. NYCFC doesn't have a bad defense. They've given up less than a goal a game. Clinfemi crushed them.
