Major Link Soccer - Open Cup Upsets

Two Open Cup matches went go to penalties and two MLS teams get knocked out of the tournament.

Seattle

With Oba and Dempsey both potentially missing matches, the Sounders will once again be looking to other heads on the hydra. American Soccer Analysis looks at the statistics on how this could affect our attack.

Deandre Yedlin has been spending the week at home here in Seattle, but rumor has it that he may be loaned to Norwich City.

Jordan Morris was also in town repping the Sounders and talking about his experience with the national team.

MLS

The "official" MLS Power Rankings are out and the Sounders are at the top for the fifth consecutive week.

In your bi-weekly Drogba-to-MLS news, Drogba is rumored to have rejected an offer from Orlando City FC.

NYCFC is rumored to be pursuing Italian international midfielder Andrea Pirlo, but Hudson River Blue isn't thrilled about the idea.

Toronto FC is also trialing another Italian, midfielder Daniele Gallopa.

US Open Cup

The Richmond Kickers kept it close against the The Columbus Crew, only falling after the Crew scored two goals in extra time.  (Richmond recap | Columbus recap)

The Charlotte Independence scored the first upset of the night, beating the New England Revolution by a score of 1-0.  (Charlotte Recap | New England Recap)

The Houston Dynamo cruised to an easy victory over the Austin Aztex, taking the lead in the 24th minute and never relinquishing it.

Orlando City SC and Charleston Battery reached 90 minutes tied at 2-2. They proceeded to double that to 4-4 in the 30 minute extra time. Each team took 10 penalty kicks before the match was finally decided in Orlando City's favor.

NYCFC promised to prioritize the US Open Cup, but failed to make it through their first round against the Cosmos. After taking a quick 3-1 lead in penalties, they ended up losing 4-3.

The LA Galaxy had a rather stress-free match against the last Amateur team int he tournament, destroying PSA-Elite by a score of 6-1.

World Cup

The US Women have secured their place in the knockout stages, but not with the dominant performances that many were predicting. WorldSoccerTalk wonders if they are they slowly getting up to speed, or have they already stalled?

Whatever the case, it was good to see Alex Morgan with her first start in over two months.

World

Just in case you haven't reached your quota for strange red cards this week, there was plenty of confusion at the end of the Brazil-Colombia match in Copa America where Neymar received a red card as he reached the tunnel. Colombia's victory over Brazil was their first in 24 years.
