Román Torres named to Panama's roster for upcoming friendlies

Sounders center back will miss match against Toronto FC on Sept. 5.

Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

Just a day after Román Torres made his Seattle Sounders debut, it was revealed that the hulking center back will be called away for national team duty at the start of next month. Torres is one of 20 players being called up for Panama's friendlies against Uruguay (Sept. 4) and Venezuela (Sept. 8), both of which are during a FIFA international window.

The good news, if you can call it that, is that Torres should only have to miss one Sounders match, Sept. 5 vs. Toronto FC. The Sounders' next game is on Sept. 12 against the San Jose Earthquakes.

Torres probably won't be the only player the Sounders are missing for that match, though. The United States has matches scheduled against Peru (Sept. 4) and Brazil (Sept. 8) and Paraguay has a match against Chile on Sept. 5. Clint Dempsey will almost definitely be called in, assuming he's healthy, and Brad Evans seems a reasonable bet to be gone, too. Nelson Haedo Valdez has been a regular with Paraguay, although it's at least possible they go with a younger lineup for this match.
