Major Link Soccer: Lagerwey on returning to Rio Tinto

New, 30 comments

It's time for Garth to beat the team he built. Steve Zakuani gives Gerrard and Lampard some advice about MLS. Toronto don't want to give up Bradley and Jozy for a friendly.

Seattle

We had to wait until late August, but tomorrow's matchup is the first of the season between Seattle Sounders FC and Real Salt Lake. Surely Garth Lagerwey must have mixed feelings about the prospect of returning to Rio Tinto as the enemy, but he sidesteps the drama in this interview on the topic. He does have some nice things to say about Seattle, though.

A week previewing the University of Washington's men's soccer season begins with the goalkeeper position.

Merritt Mathias has worked her way into a key role in Seattle Reign's powerful attack, and our own Eric Flatness details how her tireless play and work off the ball have contributed more than just goals to her first season with the team.

The scope of this piece is beyond Seattle and soccer in general, but since it was published on Lookout Landing I'll leave it here. It is, however, worth a read for anyone who watches American sports. Major League Baseball Advanced Media has quietly become an enormous player in streaming paid content -- they could be poised to become the ESPN of the sports-streaming age.

As mentioned in this space last week, the thing about falling so far in the power rankings is it provides so much potential for a dramatic rise back to the top! (There's still a ways to go).

The "website for British men" interviewed Steve Zakuani about what MLS is like, particularly for star players coming from England. Zak also talks a bit about mentoring DeAndre Yedlin, pushing him to attend Akron.

Is Del Roy Hansen running Real Salt Lake into the ground?

The Chicago Fire are not good, with only 1 point to show for every game played this season. Now, the Fire's highest paid players has been shipped off to Hull City in an event that, as they put it over at Hot Time in Old Town, pretty much encapsulates the season.

Yes, Toronto FC, it sucks when you have USMNT first-teamers on your club team, especially when friendlies come at awkward times in the season. Greg Vanney would like Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore to skip a friendly to help Toronto make the playoffs. Speaking of Vanney, he doesn't blame the defense alone for the massive number of goals his team has given up this year.

Here's the first series of licensed MLS apparel from Ohio-based company Homage:

Arizona United SC gets forward Schillo Tshuma on loan again from MLS. He most recently played at Timbers FC 2.

Rayo Vallecano of Spain's La Liga have purchased a majority share in the Oklahoma City FC NASL franchise. [Spanish]

The Blatter-Platini battle continues, and it will define the upcoming election for FIFA's next president.

If you are an AS Roma fan, here's some great news, and if you aren't you might as well become one (or that's probably what Roma is hoping you'll think), because you will have access to a lot of the team on Comcast Sportsnet.

And finally, here is the best kind of pitch invader, a dog who just wants to play tag.
