MLS Draft 2016: Sounders select left-footed CB with 27th pick

Cal-State Dominguez Hills player Tony Alfaro started 71 of his 75 appearances in NCAA D II

Reportedly one of the better center backs with the ball at his feet, the Seattle Sounders picked Tony Alfaro to add to their defensive depth. Alfaro was born in Mexico and grew up in Santa Barbara before playing for Cal-State Dominguez Hills, a Division II school. He won the California Interscholastic Federation title as a high school junior and the regional title as a senior. Both times he was the all CIF first team player.

Tony scored five of his 10 college goals from the penalty spot. Alfaro was also one of two team captains. Analysis on the live broadcast of the draft calls him a technical player that should help Seattle play from the back.

Seattle currently has starting CBs Chad Marshall, Brad Evans and Roman Torres. Their depth in the position includes Alfaro, Damion Lowe and Jimmy Ockford. Mostly likely, Alfaro will be fighting for time with S2, although Oniel Fisher was a second-round pick who ended up with significant senior team minutes a year ago.
