We know the Seattle Sounders will spend at least some of their 2017 preseason in Tucson. We’ve now learned the team will also head East to take part in the 2017 Carolina Challenge Cup. This will be the second time the Sounders play in this preseason tournament.

The thirteenth incarnation of the Cup will include four teams: Seattle Sounders, Columbus Crew, Charleston Battery and Atlanta United. The tournament marks Columbus’ fourth appearance, the first since 2012, and in 2004 they took home the trophy by edging out D.C. United on goal differential.

As the host, Charleston has been involved every year and has finished second twice, 2008 and 2011. In 2014 the Sounders were second to D.C. United on goal differential.

"We are thrilled to bring Major League Soccer back to Charleston, South Carolina for the 2017 Carolina Challenge Cup," said Andrew Bell, Charleston Battery President. "We always enjoy the level of excitement that these games bring and we look forward to our local soccer fans being able to see some of the very best players in the U.S. right here in the Lowcountry."

The tournament will provide a first look at Atlanta United as an MLS team and a sneak peak at Gerardo Martino’s coaching style as well as what he can bring to Atlanta and MLS as a whole.

The tournament will begin mid-February and take place over three days, with the four teams playing in a round robin style tournament.
